1st Old Boys Silver Band at the Proms

The band represented Northern Ireland and brass bands in the 2009 BBC Last night of the Proms at Hillsborough Castle. The weather was fantastic and there was an audience of 7000  promenaders. The under the direction of conductor, Stephen Cairns, the band played a short pre-proms concert which was broadcast around the grounds of the beautiful Hillsborough estate.

 They were under a strict time regime by the BBC, so at exactly 19:20, Stephen Cairns led the band in Rimsky Korsakov's 'Cortege from Malada'.

Then at 7.30 the 1st Old Boys performed the famous Holzman march 'Blaze Away!' This went out live on BBC Radio Ulster's program 'Proms in the Park.'

The band concluded their short program with ballet music from Arthur Sullivan's  'Pineapple Poll' arranged by Charles Mackerras.

The 1st Old Boys then had a 2 hour wait until they were to perform the world premiere of Eoin ROE's fanfare specially composed for the event.

 Eoin was the junior winner of The Young Composers' Competition 2009 and was comissioned by the BBC to write a piece for 5 cornets,3 horns, 2euphs 3 trombones and Tuba.

The band then concluded by joining up with the Ulster Orchestra in a performance of the Finale 1812 overture Fireworks and all. The band gave an excellent account of its self and everyone had an enjoyable day
