Jimmy first joined the band in 1969 at the age of nine. He started on 2nd tenor horn and was taught by his father who was the soprano cornet player for the band at that time. By the age of 12 he had progressed onto the trombone and by 16 he had achieved the position of principal trombone.
After years of much practicing Jimmy, at 19 then left the band to attend The Royal College of Music in London. It was on his return that he resumed the position within the band once more.
Jimmy has guested with many orchestras such as the Ulster Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra to name but a few. He has also held the position of principal trombone with The Castleward Opera Orchestra for 12 years. He regularly tours with different theatre companies and has just finished a recent tour with the Ulster Theatre Company performing The Wizard Of OZ.
Jimmy is a versatile trombone player and only last year due to our euphonium player taking ill, stepped in at the last moment and played solo euph in the 1999 NIBA. Not only did he do a great job but also he won the best instrumentalist prize, of the day.
In closing, Jimmy is a true brass band character and is well respected as a 1st class trombone player throughout the province.
